As the 260-year Edo period came to an end, Kyoto entered a period of upheaval.
At that time, this village far from the city of Kyoto became the stage for history.
Tomomi Iwakura , a member of the Imperial Court, was plotting to move history forward in this area. Many samurai who sympathized with him and opposed the ruling powers of the time visited this private residence.
When the ruling government collapsed and the Edo period came to an end, the emperor moved from Kyoto to Tokyo, and Tokyo became the capital. This ushered in the Meiji period.
The city of Kyoto has an elegant image today, but at the end of the Edo period, many samurai lost their lives in the upheaval. The Iwakura Residence was one of the stages of this upheaval.
