Go up the slope from the Senbon Kitaoji intersection towards Mt.Takagamine.
There are buses on the route, but I walked all the way up, looking at Mt. Hiei on my right.
At the end of the road, I found my destination, Genko-an Temple.
The round window in the main hall is the “window of enlightenment”.
The square window is the “window of confusion”.
You can enjoy the view of the garden, framed by the round and square windows, from the main hall.
Footprints and handprints remain on the ceiling boards (called “Chi Tenjou” in Japanese).
The blood-stained ceiling, a relic of Fushimi Castle, is still vivid.
These are the footprints and handprints of the samurai who were injured in the Battle of Fushimi Castle. In order to preserve the memories of that time for future generations, the floorboards have been incorporated into the ceiling. now, the souls of the Samurai of that time still dwell here.
On the way back, we don’t go back the way we came.
We go down the Gentaku Road to the east.
If we do that, we can see the splendid “Odoi Ato” (ruins of the earthen rampart).
