The Tonomura Shigeru Residence is the birthplace and childhood home of Tonomura Shigeru. The Japanese-style architecture, with its beautiful garden visible from every room, is a sight to behold.
The earthen floor, which gives us an idea of how people lived in those days, and the kawado, which brought water from the irrigation channel into the residence, have been preserved. The house is preserved as one of the residences of Omi Merchants that remain in the Gokasho-kondo area.
The Tonomura-ke family was a branch of the Tonomura Uhei-ke family, and were Omi Merchants who dealt in kimono and cotton.Shigeru also took over the family business, but later gave it to his younger brother and went on to become a novelist. His representative works include those depicting the world of the Omi merchants from which he came.
