Visit the mansion of Hikoshiro Fujii in Gokasyo (Higashi-omi)

Shiga

If you walk a little from the Gokasyo-kondo area, you will come to the Miyasho district, where you will find the grand residence of Hikoshiro Fujii.Hikoshiro Fujii was one of the Omi merchants from Gokasyo who achieved success with hand-knitted wool and artificial twisted yarn.

The grounds of this mansion are 8,155 square meters. This means that it is the size of a 90m x 90m square. The building site is 710 square meters, so the rest of the area is a vast garden.
The garden is a strolling garden with a pond. The buildings consist of a guest hall that serves as a guest house, a western-style house that looks like a mountain lodge, a main house for living, and a storehouse.

The guest house is a luxurious building made entirely of Japanese cypress, as befits a guest house. In contrast, the main house is very simple. Both the garden and the buildings are worth seeing.

If you go to the countryside, you can still see traditional Japanese houses like this preserved. The Fujii Hikoshiro Residence is a valuable building.
