Higashiyama at dusk, “Sannen-zaka area to Yasaka-jinja Shrine” (Kyoto)

Kyoto

At dusk, the Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka areas in Higashiyama are lit up with lights, creating a charming streetscape. However, in recent years, many tourists have flocked to this area, and the charm has been lost in half.

Enter Yasaka-dori Street from Higashi-oji Street to the east. At the end of the narrow road, you can see Yasaka Tower (Yasaka Pagoda), a popular photo spot. If you continue walking along the road, you will reach Sannen-zaka, where the charming streetscape remains. Finally, go up the stairs to Kiyomizu-michi Street. Go up the slope to the east and you will reach Kiyomizu-dera Temple.Even after 5pm, the crowds of tourists make you realize how overtouristed Kyoto is.

On the way back, enter Ninen-zaka from Sannen-zaka. The charming streetscape continues here as well. The crowds thin out from Kodaiji-dori Street (Nene-no-michi), and you can experience quiet Kyoto when you enter Ishibe-koji Path. The goal is the main gate of Yasaka-jinja Shrine. This route is the best way to experience the atmosphere of Kyoto.
