Let’s walk around Ponto-cho (Kyoto)

Kyoto

Ponto-cho is one of the five geisha districts (kagai districts) in Kyoto City. It is a long, narrow street that runs between the Kamo-gawa River and the Takase-gawa River. In the evening, paper lanterns are lit up, and the stone paving makes for a very atmospheric place.

However, in recent years, it has become a place where the atmosphere of Kyoto is disappearing, just like Hanami-koji Street in Gion, as it is now crowded with foreign tourists. There are many restaurants lined up, so it is usually bustling with tourists. It gets crowded at dinner time.

When I visited, there were few people around, so I was able to enjoy a Kyoto-like atmosphere for a while. The Kamo-gawa River as seen from Ponto-cho is also very atmospheric.
