The longest shopping street in Japan, approximately 2.6 km long, is located in the northern part of Osaka City. Its name is Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street. This shopping street stretches north and south from the northern part of Tenjin-bashi Bridge to Tenjinbashi-suji 6-chome.It is one of Osaka’s most famous shopping streets and is visited by many locals. Recently, foreign tourists can also be seen here.

You can walk from one end of this long shopping street to the other, but you can enjoy the lively atmosphere by walking from Tenjinbashi-suji 2-chome on the south side to Tenjinbashi-suji 5-chome on the north side.
The nearest subway station to Tenjinbashi-suji 2-chome is Minami-morimachi Station (Osaka Metro Subway), or JR Osaka-temmangu Station (JR Tozai Line). The nearest subway station to Tenjinbashi-suji 5-chome is Tenjinbashi-suji 6-chome Station (Osaka Metro Subway), or JR Temma Station (JR Osaka Loop Line).

In addition to shops selling daily necessities, miscellaneous goods, and clothing, there are many restaurants in this shopping street. Some IZAKAYA (Japanese style bar) are open from noon, and there are also restaurants serving Japanese cuisine that are well known to foreign tourists, so it’s a good idea to visit this shopping street for lunch or dinner.

Osaka is a city known for its cheap and delicious food and good value for money. So, food is cheap at every restaurant. As you walk through the shopping street, you will find a supermarket called TAMADE. This supermarket is particularly known for its extremely low prices. Please take a look inside and check out the prices for yourself.

Near JR Tenma Station, there is a local market called Tenma Market. This market is a public market specializing in fresh produce. The freshness and prices are so good that even restaurant owners come here to buy supplies. The area around JR Tenma Station is known for its bars. Standing bars and small restaurants are packed together, and it gets crowded with drinkers in the evenings. It’s one of the best spots for those who enjoy a drink.

The best thing about Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street is that it is covered by an arcade (although there are some gaps).so it’s easy to walk around even on rainy days or when the sun is strong. It’s an interesting shopping street where you can enjoy the food of the common people of Osaka and experience the atmosphere of local life, so if you come to Osaka, you should definitely visit at least once. However, I hope that it doesn’t become as crowded with foreign tourists as Kyoto’s Nishiki Market.
