Visit Myotsu-ji Temple, an ancient temple in Obama (Wakasa/Fukui)

Fukui(Wakasa)

From National Highway 27, turn onto National Highway 23.Drive for about 5 minutes toward the mountains, and you will find Myotsu-ji Temple.

According to the chief priest, the temple was founded in the Heian period (794-1185). Since the temple is located in the mountains, it was not involved in many wars, and the buildings and Buddhist statues have survived to this day.The main hall and three-story pagoda are said to be from the Kamakura period(1185-1336), and the Buddhist statues from the Heian period.

If you visit this temple, be sure to sit down in the main hall.Although small in size, you can feel the dignity and weight of the Kamakura-era buildings.

When I visited, the wind blowing across the main hall was cool and the greenery seen from the hall was lush making for a pleasant time.Incidentally, the main hall and the three-story pagoda are designated as national treasures.

Wakasa is the name of a region located in the south of Fukui Prefecture. Myotsu-ji Temple is located in Obama City in the Wakasa region.
