When you come to Tondabayashi Jinai-machi, stop by the Former Sugiyama Family Residence and the Former Tanaka Family Residence (Osaka).

Osaka

Jinai-machi in Tondabayashi-cho was established as a religious autonomous city in the mid-16th century.By the Edo period (1603-1868), its religious character had faded, and it developed into a thriving commercial town. The old-established houses of Jinai-machi still line its streets today.

Particularly eye-catching is the vast former Sugiyama family residence. The Sugiyama family was an old family dating back to the founding of the Jinai-machi, and during the Edo period, they amassed wealth as sake brewers. The former Sugiyama family residence still retains structures built during the Edo period, so we highly recommend touring the interior.

Former Tanaka Family Residence

There is one more townhouse open for viewing in Jinai-machi. It is the Former Tanaka Family Residence. This building, constructed in 1892 (Meiji 25), is a modern residence in the classic townhouse style. For older Japanese people, it has a somewhat nostalgic atmosphere.According to Meiji period (1868-1912) records, the Tanaka family appears to have been wealthy from the late Edo period through the Meiji period.

Compared to the Old Sugiyama Residence, this building is newer. It is also smaller in scale. However, since you can see a Meiji period (1868-1912) building here, different from the Edo period architecture of the Old Sugiyama Residence, it’s worth stopping by.Note that the furnishings inside the building are displayed as exhibits and therefore differ from the building’s construction period.
